The Trump administration is moving to end taxpayer-funded housing benefits for unauthorized immigrants.

“American tax dollars should support American citizens, especially amid our nation’s housing crisis,” stated Scott Turner, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“This new agreement will utilize resources, including technology and personnel, to prioritize the needs of the American people in public housing. We will collaborate closely with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to optimize our resources and ensure American citizens come first.”

The agreement establishes a partnership between HUD and DHS aimed at preventing housing funds from benefiting unauthorized immigrants.

Additionally, Turner has directed that HUD-funded service providers are prohibited from offering financial assistance to these individuals.

A 2023 study by the Center for Immigration Studies indicated that nearly 60% of households led by unauthorized immigrants receive at least one major form of taxpayer-funded welfare, compared to 39% of households led by native-born Americans.

Notably, almost half of the households headed by unauthorized immigrants rely on food stamps, while 39% are enrolled in Medicaid.
