In a new survey released Thursday, concerns about the influence of artificial intelligence on the workforce have intensified. Over half of U.S. managers reported they are using AI to make significant employment decisions.
The poll from Resume Builder found that more than 60% of managers utilize AI when evaluating their direct reports. The survey highlighted that a significant number of managers rely on AI for determining promotions (77%), raises (78%), and even layoffs (64%).
Alarmingly, more than 20% of respondents allow AI to make final decisions without any human oversight, while half admit they are responsible for assessing whether AI could replace any of their team members.
Stacie Haller, chief career adviser at Resume Builder, cautioned against stripping the human element from human resources. “While AI can provide data-driven insights, it lacks context, empathy, and judgment,” she stated.
This survey comes at a time when global leaders are urging tech companies to approach advancements in AI with caution.
In June, a California state senator proposed the No Robo Bosses Act, aiming to prevent employers from allowing AI to make key decisions without human input. “AI must remain a tool under human control, not the other way around,” said state Sen. Jerry McNerney, D-Pleasanton, in a statement regarding the legislation.
Following his election by the papal conclave in May, Pope Leo XIV identified AI as a major challenge for humanity. He emphasized the need for “responsibility and discernment” in harnessing AI’s “immense potential” for the benefit of society.
The Resume Builder survey, conducted from June 24, included responses from 1,342 U.S. managers via the online polling platform Pollfish. No margin of error was reported.
