The Trump Administration has requested that Harvard University provide information regarding its foreign donations, intensifying its ongoing scrutiny of the institution.
The Education Department announced that it sent a records request to Harvard after a review of the university’s foreign financial reports indicated “incomplete and inaccurate disclosures.”
This information was shared in a statement from the Education Department on Friday.
In response, Harvard stated that it has adhered to legal requirements, reporting foreign gifts and contracts exceeding $250,000 annually.
“Support from alumni and donors at all levels has been essential to our continued excellence in our research and teaching mission,” the university’s statement said.
This renewed inquiry marks a return to investigations initiated during Trump’s first term concerning foreign donations and contracts to colleges.
For many years, Congress has mandated that universities receiving federal financial aid disclose any gifts, contracts, or restricted agreements from foreign sources valued at $250,000 or more each year.
Recently, a bill passed in the House proposes lowering this threshold to $50,000.
