A recent Gallup survey reveals what Americans anticipate from the Trump administration in the coming four years.

The poll shows that nearly 70% of respondents (68 percent) believe the new administration will effectively manage immigration.

However, optimism wanes when it comes to bridging political divides; only 33% of those surveyed feel that Trump will be able to heal the nation’s political rifts.

Around 60% of respondents believe that Trump will succeed in reducing unemployment, ensuring national security against terrorism, and boosting the economy.

Just over half (54%) expect him to cut U.S. taxes, while 51% think he will lower the crime rate. However, only about a third (35%) feel optimistic that the Trump administration will enhance environmental quality.

The survey also indicates that a majority of respondents doubt Trump’s ability to improve race relations, education, and the conditions for minorities and the poor. Additionally, many believe he won’t make a significant dent in the federal budget deficit or reduce grocery prices.

As illustrated in the chart below, a similar set of questions was posed to U.S. voters in 2016 regarding their expectations for Trump’s first term in office.

Between the two survey waves, the most significant change occurred regarding whether the government could keep the nation out of war, showing a 17-point increase in positive responses. Despite this improvement, just over half of respondents (55%) still believe the government will successfully prevent conflict.

On the other hand, optimism has notably declined concerning Trump’s ability to improve the healthcare system. While 52% of respondents felt confident in 2016, that number has dropped to only 40% in 2024, reflecting a 12-point decrease in confidence.
